Lellie Ward

Lellie offers a variety of lesson, clinic, coaching and training services to students and horses at every level.  From beginner to advanced, Lellie has a passion for teaching and today carries on the legacy of the best trainers and riders from all over the U.S. and Europe.

Having dedicated her life to the pursuit of excellence in riding, Lellie offers real life analogies and stories that make even the most complicated riding or training technique easy to understand and apply. Driven by her devotion to the further development of her riding, training and teaching skills, Lellie continues to seek out personal assistance from top-notch instructors and to compete at the upper levels of eventing and show jumping.

Born in Glen Cove, NY, Lellie began riding with her grandfather, F. Skiddy von Stade, an avid Aiken horseman who first introduced her to fox hunting, polo and Thoroughbred racing.  Lellie's formal education began on Long Island, as a long-time member of the Meadowbrook Hounds Pony Club. During this time, she also rode horses for Charlie Plumb, father of nine-time Olympic rider J. Michael Plumb and spent 10 years as a working student for Olympic Gold Medalist, Torrance Watkins, through the 1978 World Championships and 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Lellie continued to develop her riding and training education in Europe, by focusing first on Dressage with Egon von Neindorff.  While in Germany, Lellie obtained the Silver Test Level of horsemanship and stable management.

While in Ireland, she studied with world champion rider, Iris Kellet. Here she was able to ride in international Eventing competitions for the first time and passed the British Horse Society Assistant Instructors Test at the top of her class.  Following her time in Ireland and leading up to the Barcelona Olympics, Lellie trained with Jane Holderness-Roddam at Church Farm in England.

Additionally, Lellie’s other accomplishments include: training with the top riders and coaches in the U.S. while bringing 10 horses from the ground up to advanced levels; being long-listed for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics with her English-bred horse The Traveling Man; successfully competing at Rolex Kentucky 3 and 4 Star Events 4 (four) times on 3 different horses; and, being named the USEA's Training Level Rider of the Year in 2008.
